Caerketton, with the white scars of the ski centre on its lower slopes, is the most familiar view of the Pentlands from Edinburgh. The traverse of its undulating ridge offers excellent views of both the city and the hills to the south. The rocky craigs on the north face are loose but offer adventurous short climbs in both summer and winter. Indeed, they provided early challenges for Edinburgh climing luminaries such as Dougal Haston.
Walks incorporating Caerketton can be started from either the ski centre or Boghall. These can be made circular by countouring to the east of Caerketton along the path at the top of the woods. These rounds can be extended by including the summit of Allermuir.
