Carnethy (Hill) is the closest of the Pentland Hills to Penicuik.
There are various logical routes taking in the summit of Carnethy. It may be climbed on its own from the A702 lay-by (NT 211608) using the well-defined path up to the "Carnethy col" (NT 195616). An alternative direct route branches NNE (at NT 208611) off the path from the lay-by, climbing via a wide grassy path to a col (at NT 210617). From here, careful navigation is required to follow a very narrow path to the col between Carnethy and Turnhouse (NT 208623). This latter path is better identified first in descent. Carnethy is also naturally included in routes along the line of hills from Turnhouse to West Kip.
