Spittal Hill is the highest point of the 3.5km broad ridge running from the "Kips col" (NT 174604) to the village of Carlops. Sitting high above the North Esk Reservoir, this ridge also gives excellent views of the higher Borders hills to the south.

The ridge topped by Spittal Hill also includes Green Law and Patie's Hill, and is naturally incorporated into a number of rounds. The shortest starts from the village of Nine Mile Burn then ascends the Monks Rig, swinging round to the West, rather than descending to the Kips col. From the col beyond Spittal Hill it is possible to return directly to Nine Mile Burn or continue over Patie's Hill to Carlops. A walk back to Nine Mile Burn along the A702 can be avoided by taking a footpath and minor road that run parallel, a little to the NW of the main road. The Spittal Hill ridge can also be traversed as part of a round of the hills on one or both sides of the valley containing the North Esk Reservoir.
