West Cairn Hill was a Marilyn, before it was spotted that the highest point of East Cairn Hill was 567m, rather than 561m. Its summit is a good viewpoint, being surrounded by steep ground in all directions but E to SW and giving good views of East Cairn Hill. From the summit of West Cairn Hill there is an attractive gentle descent to the SW, curving round to the South, over a distance of two kilometers.
Starting from Baddinsgill, West Cairn Hill can be climbed by taking the drove road to the Cauldstane Slap col (NT 118589) and returning from the foot of West Cairn Hill's SW ridge via the NW branch of the drove road. Note that the area between the foot of the ridge and the end of the drove road is very rough and trackless and it may not be possible to find a pleasant route through this section. The alternative of continuing via Byrehope Mount and/or Craigengar involves further arduous terrain.
