West Kip 1

The higher of the two Kips (and on the left in the left hand photograph above), West Kip is the closest that the Pentlands get to a steep rocky summit. Although close to its neighbouring top, East Kip, and with only 34m drop between them, their steepness makes the traverse of both not something to be dismissed.

The Kips are logically climbed by taking the Eastside Farm track from the A702 (NT 198597) for 2.8km to the "Kips col" (NT 174604). Although it is possible to drop down to the Eastside Farm track after East Kip, the more aesthetic descent route is via South Black Hill to the village of Silverburn, 800m along the A702 from the starting point.

An alternative route to the "Kips col" starts from Nine Mile Burn (NT 177577) and takes the Monk's Rig over Cap Law (NT 175599), passing the Font Stone (NT 176593). The walk back to Nine Mile Burn (which is 3.8km from Silverburn) along the A702 may be avoided by making use of the McEwans 100 bus.
